The seven states that rely on the Colorado River missed a conservation agreement deadline on Tuesday, leaving talks stalled as current water guidelines near expiration. The Bureau of Reclamation has stated it may step in if no consensus is reached. Nevada, which receives the smallest share of the river, has implemented strong conservation measures. Bronson Mack of the Southern Nevada Water Authority told FOX5 Vegas, “This really sets Nevada up and specifically Southern Nevada for being the most water secure community on the Colorado River system,” adding, “They really need to be commended.”

Amid ongoing negotiations, concerns over transparency and the potential for prolonged legal disputes have emerged. John Berggren, a water policy manager for Western Resource Advocates, told KTNV that litigation “on an interstate compact, can take decades to resolve.”

Following talks on Monday and on Tuesday, no concrete framework was reached, prompting worries of federal intervention. A joint statement from the seven Colorado River Basin states, the Department of the Interior, and the Bureau of Reclamation noted “there is still a long road ahead,” adding, “Through continued cooperation and coordinated action, there is a shared commitment to ensuring the long-term sustainability and resilience of the Colorado River system,” as per KTNV
