When the city's first responders aren't busy saving lives on the streets, they're rolling up their sleeves to do so at the blood drive. Last Thursday, the Detroit East Medical Control Authority (DEMCA) partnered with the Detroit Fire Department (DFD) and Versiti Blood Center of Michigan for a First Responder Blood Drive, as reported by the City of Detroit. The event took place at the Detroit Fire Department Walter P. Harris Regional Training Academy and saw a turnout of police and fire department personnel donating a total of 24 units of blood. The drive was deemed a robust success—a crucial one, considering the dire need for donations to keep up with the demand from local hospitals.
Damon Gorelick, Executive Director of DEMCA, expressed gratitude, highlighting the dual role of Detroit's first responders in saving lives during emergencies and through blood donations. "Every day, Detroit’s first responders save lives in the field—and today, they extended that life-saving mission to the blood drive," Gorelick said. According to the City of Detroit's news release, the event also featured a raffle sponsored by DEMCA, where participating donors could win cash prizes as a thank-you for their contributions.
Executive Fire Commissioner Chuck Simms underscored the commitment of the first responders not just to protecting and saving the lives in immediate danger, but also to those who may need blood during emergencies. "Our mission is to protect and save lives," Commissioner Simms told the City of Detroit. "Partnering with DEMCA to collect blood for Versiti is another way we can make a real difference." The significance of each donation was emphasized, with every pint of blood having the potential to save up to three lives.
Dr. Robert Dunne, Medical Director for DFD, called attention to the ongoing importance of blood donation. "Donating blood is one of the simplest and most impactful ways to help others," Dunne stated, encouraging regular donations as a life-saving action in the City of Detroit's news release. Versiti, a nonprofit focused on blood health solutions, praised the collaboration. Ashley Minor, Regional Manager of Donor Recruitment for Versiti, lauded the efforts of the selfless donors. "Thanks to the selfless first responders and city employees who donated today, we’re able to bolster the blood supply when our community needs it most. Together, we’re saving lives," Minor said.
