The Detroit Zoo announced the birth of a female giraffe calf on Sunday. According to a Facebook post cited by ClickOnDetroit, "This adorable little one is already standing strong, nursing well, and hitting all her important early milestones." The calf is being cared for by her mother, 7-year-old Zara, while her father, 17-year-old Jabari, who has lived at the Detroit Zoo since 2008, watches over them.
A new giraffe calf has been born at the Detroit Zoo, joining a herd now totaling five giraffes, including Kivuli and Mpenzi, as per Fox2 Detroit. "Both Mom and calf are doing great!" zoo officials shared, noting the importance of the birth for conservation and education as giraffes face threats in the wild, as reported by Detroit Free Press.
The calf’s public introduction and naming have been delayed to allow bonding time with her mother, and the giraffe facility will remain closed in the meantime. Zoo officials plan to provide updates on the calf’s public debut and name, emphasizing the importance of these captive births for raising awareness about vulnerable giraffe populations.
