Almost 700 Ponderosa High School students engaged in a critical lesson on the dangers of fentanyl, guided by the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office School Resource Officer team. The educational effort, aimed at raising awareness about the peril of counterfeit pills laced with potentially lethal doses of fentanyl, saw collaboration with the El Dorado County Fire Protection District, Sierra Chaplaincy and fire personnel.
According to a social media post by the El Dorado County Fire Protection District, the student presentation included scenarios, instructional videos, and insights shared by first responders. The program took a hands-on approach to teach students about the gravity of what has become a nationwide issue. Engine 28 and Medic 28 from Shingle Springs were mentioned as participating units in this vital initiative.
The outreach began in 2024 and has since been introduced to numerous high schools within El Dorado County. More schools are expected to join in the upcoming months. This movement stands as an active step against a backdrop of increasing fentanyl-related overdoses. The fire department has called upon parents and guardians to engage with their children regarding the subject matter of the program and the significance of making well-informed life choices.
A session aimed at parents will take place next Monday, from 5:00pm to 7:00pm in Ponderosa High School's library. It promises to equip attendees with a summary of the program and provide access to a Q&A panel. Panelists are set to include a former narcotics detective, a Deputy District Attorney specialized in fentanyl cases, and representatives from community organizations focused on youth wellness.
El Dorado Fire expressed gratitude for the opportunity to be involved in the educational program and reiterated their commitment to the cause. "We remain committed to prevention, education, and strengthening the safety of our community’s youth," the department stated.
