As the federal government shutdown continues, many Sacramento families face financial strain, and their pets may go unfed. Recognizing this, Pet Evolution in Folsom launched a pet food drive this month, with owner Khurram Masud saying, "I don’t think anybody should be trying to make that decision — whether to feed themselves or their pet," according to KCRA.

The drive allows donations to be made directly at the store, with Masud noting, "People can buy food here or bring it in, as long as it’s unopened," and supplies are quickly distributed to local organizations like the SPCA. Despite his own business facing hardships, Masud emphasized, "I want to be that bridge that makes sure nobody has to choose between feeding themselves or their pets," as reported by KCRA.

The Sacramento SPCA has increased its capacity to serve 150 families each month, providing 50 pounds of dog food per family and prioritizing those with the greatest financial need. Families can request help or donate unopened pet food through the SPCA website or at the shelter. Masud said, "There's a ripple effect," and added, "Nobody should ever have to decide if they're going to eat or if they're going to feed their pets," as per CBS News Sacramento. Pet Evolution will continue to accept donations until the end of November, with contributions able to be dropped off or purchased directly in-store. Masud and his team are working to ensure both people and pets receive support, while Pet Evolution also plans a family-focused adoption event on Saturday.
