As Milwaukee County faces an impending vote on its 2026 budget, food security emerges at the forefront of civic urgency.
The Milwaukee County Board of Supervisors is scheduled to meet at 9:30 a.m. today to discuss the adoption of the county budget. Chairwoman Marcelia Nicholson is introducing two resolutions addressing food disparities and seeking to strengthen nutritional support programs amid concerns over federal funding reductions, according to the Milwaukee County Board's press release.
Food insecurity remains a concern in Milwaukee, particularly in neighborhoods such as Metcalfe Park. In response to Governor Evers’ state of emergency declaration, Chairwoman Marcelia Nicholson has proposed allocating $150,000 in emergency food assistance through the Department of Health and Human Services and classifying food access as a public health issue requiring coordinated action, as per the Milwaukee County Board.
The Milwaukee County Board’s budget session will begin with an invocation from Forest County Potawatomi Chairman Brooks Boyd Sr., reflecting the city’s acknowledgment of its Indigenous heritage. The meeting will also be accessible virtually to encourage broader community participation in discussions regarding local welfare initiatives.
