A former Long Island sleep center worker has been sentenced to six months in jail after a guilty plea for filming people in the bathroom at his place of employment. Sanjai Syamaprasad, who worked at Northwell Health Sleep Disorders Center, also received five years probation and is required to register as a sex offender. Despite an earlier indication that he might be sentenced solely to probation, Nassau County District Attorney Anne Donnelly pushed for incarceration due to the egregious nature of the crimes.

From July 2023 through April 2024, Syamaprasad secretly installed cameras disguised as smoke detectors to capture unsuspecting patients and co-workers, stated Donnelly. The illicit surveillance took place in bathrooms and changing areas at the two facilities in Great Neck. A Nassau County judge reconsidered an initial plea agreement, adding jail time after victims' impact statements. Following Thursday's sentencing, Donnelly expressed her stance on the matter to ABC7, "Sanjai Syamaprasad is a creep, and for his truly nauseating behavior and violation of patients' privacy rights, he deserved far more time behind bars."

Upon his arrest, prosecutors found over 300 video clips of individuals recorded without their consent. The extent of Syamaprasad's invasion emerged when he was caught watching the videos while at work. This development sparked an investigation that revealed the scope of his transgressions. The subsequent fallout has led to his sentencing and registration as a sex offender.

After the sentencing, Donnelly had harsh words for the former sleep center employee. "Now, he will learn what it feels like to be watched, when correction officers are patrolling past his cell for the next six months," she said, as obtained by CBS News.
