The Garden District is officially getting into the holiday spirit with the 9th Annual Tree Lighting, set to illuminate the neighborhood this coming Tuesday at 6 p.m. Residents are encouraged to gather at the corner of 6th and Norwich to witness the ceremonial lighting, a display intended to bring together community members in celebration of the season. Alderman Scott Spiker, the event's champion, is extending a warm invitation to all locals to be part of the festive occasion, according to the City of Milwaukee news release.
Following the tree lighting, attendees can expect to enjoy carols rendered by voices from local schools. Such gatherings have a way to seamlessly bind people, transforming strangers into participants of a shared, joyous moment. This event is just the kickoff to a longer celebration titled Winter Wonderland, which will feature 140 lighted displays and a total of 30,000 lights, remaining lit until January 9. The displays not only embody the holiday spirit but also showcase the talents of local high school students and members of the community.
For those who seek to truly indulge in holiday cheer, additional events will take place during Winter Wonderland. According to the Garden District's announcement, there will be group singing sessions on the evenings of December 10 and December 17 from 6 to 6:30 p.m. These events present an opportunity for residents to lift their voices in song and derive comfort from familiar tunes that resonate with the season's warmth, as mentioned in the City of Milwaukee news release.
Additionally, each singing session will be immediately followed by a secret Santa workshop where children can choose to wrap a gift, which to can then take home for their loved ones. This act of giving, perhaps small in its mechanics, is grand in the sense that it fosters a spirit of generosity and thoughtfulness among the youngest in our midst. More details about these events can be found by visiting the Garden District Facebook page.
