In a significant move, Governor Greg Abbott has called for a comprehensive investigation into the fiscal operations of Texas Southern University (TSU). The directive follows a report from the Texas State Auditor, which highlighted glaring faults in TSU's financial administration. The alleged mismanagement includes lapses in oversight and contracting, which signal a potential misappropriation of state funds amounting to hundreds of millions.
Specifically, "The Texas State Auditor uncovered significant financial and operational issues with Texas Southern University's accounting procedures, alleging the potential misappropriation of hundreds of millions of dollars," as stated by Governor Abbott. In response, Abbott has tasked the Texas Rangers with the investigation into TSU's finances and has enlisted the assistance of the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts as well. Abbott's stance is uncompromising, noting that "waste, fraud, and abuse will not be tolerated."
This development places TSU under the microscope, not just of the state's governance but of public scrutiny as well. The university's Board of Regents, along with other officials, is mandated to fully cooperate with the ongoing investigations. This cooperation is indispensable to ensuring that taxpayer dollars are accounted for appropriately and that the integrity of the state's financial commitments to education is preserved.
