In a timely push before the Thanksgiving holiday, Governor Kathy Hochul has announced that New York has issued over 8.2 million checks aimed at easing the pressure of inflation for its residents. These checks come as part of the newly minted Inflation Refund Check program, seen as a proactive measure by the state government to provide financial reprieve. "Today marks the day that over 8.2 million inflation refund checks have been mailed out, putting money back into the pockets of individuals across the state," Governor Hochul said in a statement obtained by the Governor's Office. "We followed through on our commitment to deliver meaningful relief to hard-working New Yorkers, and will continue, every day, to look for additional opportunities to deal with the nation’s ongoing affordability challenge."
The checks, which have totaled up 8.2 million in distribution, are part of a more extensive effort included in the FY 2026 State Budget. Allocating $2.2 billion, this effort marks the largest program of its kind in New York state history. Eligible recipients have been receiving up to $400 over the last two months to combat the rising cost of living that has surged in the shadow of national economic trends.
Though the main bulk of check mailings is now complete, the Governor's Office assures that additional checks will be disbursed as the State Tax Department uncovers more taxpayers meeting the eligibility criteria. Details of the funds allocated to each region of the state were shared by the Governor's office and reflect the widespread impact anticipated by this initiative.
The Inflation Refund Checks are just one facet of Governor Hochul's Affordability Agenda, which includes a tax cut for the middle class purporting to bring rates down to their lowest in decades, an expansion of New York's Child Tax Credit to up to $1,000 per child, and ensuring universal free school meals that could save families approximately $1,600 per child annually.
