In the wake of a government shutdown that has left thousands of Nevadans without SNAP benefits, Governor Joe Lombardo took a momentous step to show solidarity with the affected citizens by touring Three Square Food Bank. Alongside CEO Beth Martino, his presence brought attention to the vital role that local food banks are playing during this period of need, as reported by FOX5 Vegas.
The collaboration between the state government and the food banks showcases a concerted effort to mitigate the impact of the federal government’s inaction. With over $38 million in funding from federal ARPA and state contingency funds allocated to the Food Bank of Northern Nevada and the Three Square Food Bank, the aim is to ensure those dependent on government food assistance aren't left in a lurch. This was necessary as the government shutdown prompted a hiatus in SNAP benefits for many, as noted by KTNV.
The severity of the situation is underscored by the food distribution drives organized by Three Square last Saturday, which served to support Nevadans cut off from their usual aid.
