Another significant move by Newsom was suspending certain building codes for residents impacted by the fires, an action designed to deliver certainty and prevent delays in the permit-granting process.
Additionally, technological innovations have been introduced, with the state partnering with companies such as Steadfast LA, Autodesk, and Amazon to provide AI-powered plan review tools. Despite the proactive state-level initiatives, the federal government, under former President Donald Trump’s watch, has been critiqued for its lackluster response to Los Angeles' plight. California's request for a federal disaster supplemental appropriation, to the tune of $39.68 billion, was submitted in February, following the fires that wreaked havoc across homes and businesses alike. This request has stagnated, with no action from Congress or the White House to authorize the funds that are typically allocated post-disaster. "Every week that Washington fails to act, families still living in temporary housing are forced to wait for answers that never seem to come," said Newsom, highlighting the tangible impacts on vulnerable populations like seniors, working parents, and small businesses that continue to suffer from the absence of federal aid.
