An armed robbery took place on Sunday morning when a man demanded money at gunpoint from an employee at a local espresso stand. The incident occurred at 6:45 a.m. in the 1700 block of Central Ave S., as revealed in a social media post from the Kent Police Department. The suspect reportedly left the scene in a white car after the victim, a 29-year-old Milton woman, complied with his demands. The woman, severely shaken by the event, believed that the armed man would potentially resort to shooting her.

Kent Patrol Officers were dispatched to the scene and were able quickly to obtain surveillance footage from the coffee stand. The footage enabled officers to discern the suspect vehicle's license plate. Leveraging the Flock Safety Cameras system, police were able to track the direction of the suspect's vehicle as it traveled into Auburn. Police then located the car, now parked and empty, on the lawn of a registered address in Auburn.

Auburn Police Department officers initiated surveillance on the suspect's residence, and the situation quickly escalated as they spotted a male matching the description inside the residence. To ensure the safety of all parties involved, officers from both departments coordinated to establish a perimeter. Fears rose over the possibility that the situation could turn into a hostage crisis, as the man had last been seen armed. Consequently, SWAT personnel and equipment were requested to join the effort, as detailed by the Kent Police Department.

Communication with an individual inside the suspect's home permitted officers to safely evacuate the residence's occupants. A 16-month-old child, unfortunately, was left behind in the rush to evacuate but was later retrieved by officers. During this time, a woman contacted 911 to report that the suspect had entered her husband's apartment, located nearby, and was hiding in a closet. Officers had to immediately evacuate the neighbor and his children before persuasively to engage the suspect, who had then armed himself with a steak knife. Utilizing a PA system and de-escalation techniques, officers managed to convince the man to surrender peacefully.

The cooperation and patience exemplified by the Kent and Auburn officers led to the safe capture of the 50-year-old Auburn man, who was then booked for Robbery 1. The entire incident was resolved without any physical harm to those involved. The Kent Police Department expressed gratitude to the Auburn WA Police Department for their swift and integral support, emphasizing the importance of the Flock Safety Cameras technology in effectively responding to these dangerous and time-sensitive events.
