In a notable enforcement operation at the Pharr International Bridge, U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers intercepted an array of firearms and thousands of rounds of ammunition. The seizure, which included weapons and over 2,500 rounds, marks a significant success in the ongoing battle against the arming of criminal factions operating across the border.
The crackdown took place on Oct. 18 when CBP officers engaged in outbound inspections and selected a red Dodge truck for a closer look as it was attempting to leave the United States for Mexico. A thorough search revealed a hidden stash that included a Marlin .22 caliber rifle, a Stoeger 9mm pistol with magazine, additional magazines, and a large cache of ammunition of various calibers, all concealed within the vehicle. “As this significant outbound seizure clearly illustrates, CBP has been working hard to intercept weapons, ammunition and currency used to fuel criminal organizations in Mexico,” said Port Director Carlos Rodriguez, Hidalgo/Pharr/Anzalduas Port of Entry, in an article obtained by U.S. Customs and Border Protection's newsroom.
Upon discovery, CBP officers seized the firearms, firearm parts, and an impressive range of ammunition: 1,661 rounds of 9mm, 100 rounds of .22 caliber, 700 rounds of .380 caliber, and 75 rounds of 20-gauge. The seizure underlines the relentless vigilance CBP maintains on outbound traffic, an often-overlooked aspect of border security focused on preventing the flow of illicit arms and ammunition into Mexico.
Homeland Security Investigations special agents arrested both the driver and passenger following a law enforcement operation at the Pharr International Bridge. Authorities confirmed that a criminal investigation has been initiated to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident. Officials stated that the investigation is part of ongoing efforts to address cross-border weapons trafficking and enhance security at U.S. ports of entry.
