Embattled Henderson City Councilwoman Carrie Cox has entered a not guilty plea to the accusation of illicitly recording a private conversation between a fellow councilmember and some realtors. Cox, who was indicted on a single felony charge which could see her facing up to four years behind bars and up to $5,000 in penalties, made her stance clear in a Downtown Las Vegas court today. As reported by News 3 LV, Cox refused the option of a speedy trial and will have the court date set on October 19, 2026.
The indictment came forth after allegations were raised by fellow Councilwoman Monica Larson, claiming that her privacy was breached when Cox recorded her surreptitiously at Henderson City Hall. This legal skirmish follows closely on the heels of the city council's decision to censure Cox—a formal gesture of disapproval—though it does not forcibly remove her from office, as per information from FOX5 Vegas. The ramifications of said censure include a prohibition against Cox's participation on any boards or commissions and restricting her interactions with colleagues to the bare minimum of official city representatives.
"There is much more that will come to light throughout this process, and Mrs. Cox very much looks forward to addressing these allegations through the appropriate channels in Court," articulated Cox's attorney, Josh Tomsheck, indicating their eagerness to challenge the allegations. Tomsheck's statement was obtained by News 3 LV on the backdrop of a censure vote which passed yesterday. The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department has meanwhile dug up further evidence of potential misconduct, including the operation of an unlicensed daycare by Cox.
Beyond upcoming court battles, the censure request asks the Nevada Commission on Ethics to investigate the allegations against Cox. Along with limited communication and public suspicion, this could make Cox's political future uncertain. With a trial date set, both the defense and prosecution are preparing for a lengthy legal battle in full public view.
