Hillsborough County is advancing public safety by making significant investments in Fire Rescue services, addressing the needs of its rapidly expanding population. According to information from hcfl.gov, two new fire stations have begun construction as part of this initiative. Station No. 47 is rising in North Sun City, while Station No. 48 is taking shape in Progress Village. These areas have recorded notable population surges, necessitating closer and swifter emergency services for residents.
With the number of people flocking to the county, it's become essential to increase the number of firefighters and paramedics to keep pace with the demand. In the fiscal year 2025, the county has earmarked over $280 million for Fire Rescue and has authorized staffing for 1,295 positions. This is an upsurge from 2020 figures, representing an additional $104 million and a boost of several hundred staff members who are, in a move to enhance fire and emergency medical responses across the county.
The expansion doesn't stop with just Stations 47 and 48. Designing has commenced for Station No. 49, slated for the intersection of Sligh Avenue and Anderson Road. Additionally, plans for Station No. 50, which will serve the area around Racetrack Road and Ed Radice Park, are progressing. Residents will benefit from reduced response times and increased service coverage as these facilities come online.
The county hasn't restricted its investments to building new stations alone. The Board of County Commissioners has approved the establishment of the Peak Rescue Division. In a strategic move to tackle the periods of highest call volume, this division will add 48 paramedics, among other personnel, and introduce five new rescue units.
