Hillsborough County is turning garbage trucks into roving art exhibits with the winners of their second annual Waste Reduction and Recycling Art Contest. The Solid Waste Management department made the announcement, celebrating the creative efforts of local students dedicated to environmental sustainability. According to the provided details, selected artworks centered around the recycling theme of "What Can We Do to Help the Community Reduce Waste, Reuse What We Have, and Recycle More?" are featured on recycling trucks across the county.

The contest, which invited students from grades 3 through 12, saw winners from three categories: "Clean the Beach" for grades 3-5, "Recycle and Donate" for grades 6-8, and "Reuse to Use" for grades 9-12. The winning designs have been repurposed into decals, turning these trucks into mobile statements of environmental awareness.

Moving forward, the Solid Waste Management department has announced the theme for the 2025 contest: "Small Acts, Big Impact." The aim is to showcase through student art how seemingly minor lifestyle choices can lead to significant environmental benefits. All students in the designated grade levels are encouraged to put their ideas to paper—or whatever recyclable materials they choose—and enter before next Sunday.

Each participant in the contest is not just competing for a spot on a trash truck; they're being welcomed into a community that celebrates their commitment to sustainability. The contest winners, along with all participants, will receive invitations to an annual recognition ceremony complete with sustainable giveaways. Details and submission guidelines are available on the Waste Reduction and Recycling Art Contest webpage.
