Hillsborough County's Duffels of Dignity program is celebrating a notable milestone, having reached its third anniversary. In that time, they've made significant strides in providing children in foster care not just with basic needs, but a sense of dignity. This October, the program reportedly distributed a record number of duffel bags filled with essential items to local children in need.
As detailed by Hillsborough County's official newsroom, the initiative began in October of 2022, aiming to replace the trash bags commonly used by foster children to handle their belongings. In three years, Duffels of Dignity has to quickly become emblematic of community care, gathering over 5,587 duffel bags and suitcases. Their efforts culminated this October with a surge in generosity, as hundreds of volunteers rallied to support the cause.
Among the highlights was the International City/County Management Association (ICMA) Conference held recently in Tampa, which chose Duffels of Dignity for its service project. A significant contribution from Tampa Electric allowed for the assembly of more than 300 filled duffel bags. Additionally, The Sewing Group at Arise Church donated 25 handcrafted quilts, and the nonprofit Madi's Movement dispersed multiple duffels to young adults transitioning out of foster care.
As reported, this expansion is largely attributable to volunteers who to tirelessly contribute their time, local businesses that donate supplies, and those charitable enough to provide financial assistance.
