Houston Independent School District (HISD) has officially embarked on its journey into the realm of artificial intelligence by unveiling a unique, secure iteration of ChatGPT. The newly launched "HISD Secure Workspace" is devised to assist teachers in handling administrative duties, as reported by KHOU. Houston Independent School District's step into AI does not signify a change in curriculum development or instructing methodologies, but rather aims to reduce the time educators spend on tasks such as composing emails and organizing documents.
According to the details shared by CW39, this move marks Houston Independent School District as the first public school district in the nation to incorporate ChatGPT Edu, OpenAI's educational platform tailored for K-12 education. Houston Independent School District’s Chief Technology Officer, Kerri Holt highlighted the security and privacy benefits of the tool, stating, "This new offering brings powerful, secure AI technology directly into our district’s ecosystem, built to protect our data, support our educators, and supercharge how we collaborate and innovate."
While other educational institutions, including Arizona State University and the California State University system, have already integrated ChatGPT for teaching and research purposes, Houston Independent School District is taking a decisive stance by creating a "walled garden" environment, safeguarding the sensitive information from being disseminated beyond the district. Emphasizing the significance of privacy Kerri Holt stated, "This partnership with OpenAI, it’s the first time we’ve had the opportunity to have a walled garden that’s totally private, so student data is not shared outside," Holt told KHOU.
While artificial intelligence can expedite certain processes, it remains merely a tool for educators, not a replacement. Dr. Patrick Dicks, an artificial intelligence specialist and adjunct professor, reassured concerns by suggesting AI cannot substitute vital human elements in teaching. "Artificial intelligence cannot replace critical thinking skills and analytical skills," Dicks said, "It’s just a tool to give you an answer to get you to the next step," he clarified in an interview with KHOU. Houston Independent School District and educational experts like Dicks are clear in their message that AI tools are intended to empower teachers and cannot replace the irreplaceable human touch in education.
In the wake of ongoing teacher shortages, Houston Independent School District's initiative is seen by some as a pioneering example for other districts. Dicks commended Houston Independent School District's actions but also underscored the imperative for stringent measures to ensure the technology's appropriate use by teachers, staff, and students. "Many school districts should follow behind them," he mentioned, "But they have to have those safeguards in place… if we don’t introduce artificial intelligence to adults and kids now, we’re doing a major disservice to everybody," Dicks expressed in his thoughts to KHOU.
