Texas is facing a serious outbreak of Equine Herpesvirus Type 1, linked to a recent barrel racing event in Waco, which has caused multiple horse arenas in Southeast Texas to temporarily close. "It's evidently, incredibly contagious, and that's the scary part," said Darolyn Butler of Cypress Trails Ranch, as officials and event organizers closely monitor the situation ahead of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, as reported by KHOU

The outbreak has prompted cancellations, including all Women's Professional Rodeo Association events through November, and raised concerns about the virus’s neurological form. Texas A&M veterinary diagnostician Semira Mancill advised horse owners to watch for symptoms, stating, "Typically with EHV-1, they're going to get respiratory signs, so snotty nose, coughing, lethargy, depression, maybe going off feed," according to KHOU.

Amid an Equine Herpesvirus Type 1 outbreak linked to a Waco event, Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller warned horse owners who had animals at or near the event to watch for symptoms and to "call your vet the moment something looks off." He said, "This virus can spread fast, it can be deadly, and the earliest signs are often so subtle they’re easy to miss," and advised quarantine, stopped travel, temperature checks, and cleaning of shared equipment. Amanda Wade, Montgomery County Precinct 2 facilities coordinator, said the virus has led to facility closures and event cancellations, adding, "People are terrified," as per Houston Chronicle
