
Early Sunday morning, the peace in a Killeen neighborhood was shattered by gunfire leading to a deadly confrontation between a suspect and local law enforcement. At approximately 3:10 a.m., Killeen police received reports of gunshots in the 600 block of Blake Street. Upon arrival, officers were met by a man fleeing a residence, claiming another individual inside had been shot, FOX San Antonio reports.
The ordeal escalated when, during the investigation, officers were met with gunfire from within the home. This prompted the deployment of the tactical response unit, including SWAT officers. These officers breached the residence, discovering a 25-year-old man near the entrance with gunshot wounds, he, was pronounced dead at the scene. The situation intensified as the SWAT tried to retrieve the victim, a 36-year-old man fired upon the officers, which led an officer to return fire, wounding the suspect, FOX 7 Austin notes.
The injured suspect was subsequently flown to Baylor Scott & White Medical Center and is reportedly in stable condition. In line with standard procedure, the officer involved in the shooting, who is a four-year veteran of the Killeen Police Department, has been placed on administrative leave, according to Fox San Antonio.
Details surrounding the identities of those involved in the shooting have not been released, and the motivation behind the initial shots fired remains under investigation. The local community awaits answers as Killeen police continue to examine the night's events.
