U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers at the Laredo Port of Entry nabbed a hefty haul of methamphetamine this past weekend, with an estimated street value north of $2.6 million, hidden away in a box truck amid a cargo of batteries. The seizure took place at Colombia-Solidarity Bridge, thwarting the efforts of smugglers aiming to usher this substantial quantity of drugs onto American streets, according to the U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
Port Director Alberto Flores underscored the steadfast dedication of U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers: "Our frontline CBP officers maintained strict vigilance and short circuited a significant methamphetamine smuggling attempt," he said. This bust reinforces the persistent vigilance employed by border security forces and their commitment to interdict narcotics trafficking. A statement on the U.S. Customs and Border Protection website detailed the detection and seizure of the drugs on Nov. 14 during a secondary inspection of the truck.
The intervention unfolded when a U.S. Customs and Border Protection officer redirected the box truck, which was purportedly transporting batteries, to a secondary inspection zone. Aided by canine units and nonintrusive inspection technology, officers were able to discover 40 hidden packages containing 291 pounds of what was alleged to be methamphetamine. The street value of the intercepted cache was tallied at approximately $2,604,215, striking a blow to the operations of drug traffickers.
Following the find, the U.S. Customs and Border Protection confiscated the narcotics and Homeland Security Investigations special agents took over the investigation.
