As the excitement of Formula One descends on Las Vegas next week, local authorities are working to ensure the safety of residents and visitors amid fears of rising traffic fatalities. According to FOX5 Vegas, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department is taking no chances with preparations for the Las Vegas Grand Prix on the back of statistics revealing a harrowing increase in traffic-related deaths this year, with 139 fatalities noted so far.
With the influx of thousands set to storm the city, the Metro Police, Clark County Fire, and event reps have outlined their safety plans. Undersheriff Andrew Walsh emphasized that the Grand Prix will be a "large-scale, highly coordinated operation featuring a robust law enforcement presence," as reported by KTNV. Walsh voiced his refusal to be complacent regarding the security and preparation for the event, recognizing the importance of vigilance in the face of recent traffic casualties.
Significant traffic disruptions are expected, with major road closures including portions of Las Vegas Boulevard, Koval Lane, Harmon Avenue, and Sands Avenue, as mentioned by KTNV. Starting from November 21 through November 23, closures will impact the city, with varying times for soft and hard closures to accommodate the event. People are encouraged to plan, to use alternative transportation, and to allow extra travel time.
Metro is also taking measures to prioritize pedestrian safety, which includes the installation of safety enclosures and barriers on pedestrian bridges, as noted by News3LV. "This is really important for us because the enclosures serve two purposes. First, the driver's safety. We need to make sure that people cannot throw things onto the track. And second, we want to make sure that pedestrian traffic and the flow of pedestrian traffic is unobstructed and continues during the race," Walsh told News3LV.
