Yesterday, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department's Search and Rescue team successfully executed a high-angle rescue after a climber sustained injuries in Icebox Canyon. LVMPD Search and Rescue reported that at approximately 2 pm, SAR personnel aboard their helicopter, AIR1, sprang into action following a distress call about a fallen climber with a severe leg injury.
The initial call suffered from poor reception, hampering communication efforts with the PR, however, the search and rescue team still managed to launch an expedited Level 1 response to the scene. While scant information trickled through, the crew, previously engaged in nearby training exercises, hopped aboard AIR1 and pinpointed the victim on the Refrigerator Wall, clinging to the craggy face on a ledge during an attempt of "La Cierta Edad," a recognized climbing route.
The operation saw a SAR officer skillfully deployed via a hoist to the injured party. Upon assessment, the initial diagnosis of a broken leg was revised to a dislocated knee. The victim, engaged in a self-rescue mission that was arduous due to the dislocated knee, yet persisted with a rappel descent – indicative of the determination and spirit we see in our local outdoor community.
As the climber and his partner were ferried securely back to the BLM helipad by AIR1, this sequence reinforces the message vigorously espoused by LVMPD SAR: rescues in Clark County are a public service and individuals should promptly call 911 when faced with physical peril in the wilderness; an appeal that underscores their commitment to averting larger crises with well-timed interventions, the team's Instagram post emphasized, "We do not want any one to hesitate and get themselves in a more dire situation."
