A late-night drive turned deadly Tuesday in north Houston, where a man in his 50s or 60s using a walker was struck and killed on Aldine Bender Road. Deputies responded to the 1500 block of Aldine Bender, west of U.S. 69, and the man was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver remained there and cooperated with investigators, as reported by Houston Chronicle.

According to the Houston Chronicle, Sgt. B. Bondurant of the Harris County Sheriff's Office told OnScene TV the man was standing in the roadway with a “walker type wheelchair” when a westbound vehicle hit him around 10:30 p.m. Bondurant said the driver, described as roughly 40 years old, stayed on-site and showed no signs of injury or intoxication. Investigators have not said whether the man was crossing or standing in a lane when he was struck, and the case remains under investigation.

Crash site and response

The location sits on a busy stretch of Aldine Bender that’s seen deadly collisions in recent years. As outlined by the Houston Police Department, officers investigated a separate fatal crash on Aldine Bender in February where a pedestrian was found in the roadway and the driver stopped and stayed. It’s the kind of corridor where a split second can change everything.

Earlier coverage of the corridor

Local reporting has flagged design and lighting concerns along parts of Aldine Bender. In 2023 coverage of a fatal crash on the road, ABC13 noted crews observed “no visible crosswalks” near the impact site — a detail safety advocates say can put people on foot at greater risk after dark.

Why this matters

State safety officials have repeatedly warned that pedestrian deaths cluster on busy urban arterials and often happen at night. TxDOT’s “Be Safe. Drive Smart.” campaign stresses that drivers should watch for people on foot and that communities need better lighting and crossings to prevent tragedies.

Authorities continue to investigate, and the Houston Chronicle says it will update as more details emerge. Anyone with information is urged to contact local law enforcement.
