North Dallas drivers, plan accordingly: crews are taking four of five eastbound main lanes out of service on I‑635 (the LBJ Freeway) between Preston Road and Park Central Drive, leaving only the left lane open. The squeeze starts today at 9 p.m. and is slated to last through Monday at 5 a.m., with equipment staging and ramp closures to clear the way for resurfacing and bridge work. Officials say to expect heavy delays on an already jammed corridor.
What’s closing and when
For the weekend, four of the five eastbound main lanes on the LBJ between Preston Road and Park Central Drive will be closed. The closures shift from overnight reductions to a continuous, round-the-clock shutdown of those lanes starting tonight so crews can wrap up faster, according to FOX 4 Dallas-Fort Worth. Only the left-most main lane will remain open while workers resurface the pavement. Expect traffic to crawl at peak times along the affected stretch.
Why crews are closing the road
The work is part of planned main-lane resurfacing and maintenance on the Park Central Drive bridge, the project consortium said in a press release cited by WFAA. Robert Hinkle, director of corporate affairs for the LBJ Infrastructure Group, said crews are "ensuring a safe, smooth roadway for drivers" while the work proceeds.
How to avoid the jams
The LBJ TEXpress managed lanes in this area will stay open and will be available to all drivers without a toll during the closure window, and motorists are encouraged to use the frontage roads where practical, FOX 4 reports. If you’re opting for the TEXpress lanes, time your entry — on‑ramp queues are likely — and leave extra room to merge back once the work zone ends. Local traffic apps and DFW radio updates will be the quickest way to spot any incidents or lane changes that could affect your route.
Officials urge drivers to plan alternate routes and build in extra time this weekend; emergency and transit operations are not expected to be affected, but everyone should stay alert near the work zone and obey reduced‑speed and lane‑closure signs, WFAA notes. For real-time updates, check local traffic outlets and the LBJ Express project channels before you head out.
