Los Angeles firefighters were called to a scene at 8701 Gracie Allen Drive yesterday afternoon where a massive lithium-ion battery was causing some concern. The 1,000-pound battery, hailing from a motorized cart, was found off-gassing in a location known as the "Plaza North Interstitial" – an in-between space located between the third floor and the plaza level of the Beverly Grove area building. According to the Los Angeles Fire Department's alert, there was no fire reported at the time of the incident.
Despite the size and potential risk posed by the off-gassing battery, no injuries were reported, and the operations within the facility were not impacted. The safety of everyone involved was the priority as firefighters deliberated over the safest method to move the heavy battery to the ground for mitigation. These details emerged via a press release from the LAFD, which further revealed that multiple units, including a Hazardous Materials team, were brought in to handle the situation.
Fire Station 58, along with Battalion 18 and several technical teams, was among those dispatched to the site. LAFD's alert informed the public, "Given the size and weight, firefighters are determining the safest option for getting the battery to the ground and outside for mitigation." The incident, listed as INC#0961, was attended by crews specialized in such forms of containment and prevention. The response teams were also prepared for any possible escalation should the battery's condition worsen.
The LAFD has not provided any further updates on the battery's mitigation process or its origin from the motorized cart in question.
