In what could be described as a near-miss of calamitous potential, a train in Schertz collided with an 18-wheeler truck hauling vehicles on Sunday morning, closing down a major intersection but, by some stroke of luck, resulting in no reported injuries; according to FOX San Antonio, the accident took place shortly after 10 a.m. at the intersection of Schertz Parkway and FM 78.
The truck, laden with cars and unable to move, had stopped on the south side of the train tracks, but the westbound train could not halt its heavy momentum in time resulting in the collision which emergency responders attended to finding that, against odds, there had been no derailment nor injuries to lament; KTSA reports that video of the crash was obtained, showcasing the moment of impact. Authorities and Union Pacific are investigating the crash. The intersection of Schertz Parkway and FM 3009 is expected to stay closed until around 5 p.m., but nearby roads along FM 78 remain open to keep traffic moving.
In the aftermath of the incident, The Schertz Police Department issued a cautionary statement emphasizing the importance of adhering to railroad crossing signals: "It is crucial to obey warning signs and signals at railroad crossings. These signs are in place to protect drivers by providing essential warnings of approaching trains. Ignoring them can lead to serious, even fatal, consequences. Always remember to stop, look, and listen. Trains cannot stop quickly, but you can," drawing attention to the often-underestimated power of trains their ability to tear through anything in their path and reminding the public that it's the responsibility of motorists to avoid such dangerous encounters; a message that was relayed thanks to a statement obtained by KTSA.
