In Dearborn, the long-anticipated Sewing Your Life sewing school opened its doors in Southend, with Mayor Abdullah H. Hammoud and city officials present to celebrate the event on Friday. The woman-owned and immigrant-founded business is the first to emerge from the city's Dearborn WORKS program, a joint initiative between the City and the Arab American Women’s Business Council aimed at equipping local women entrepreneurs with the skills they need to succeed in the business realm. The school, founded by Nasim Alghuzzy, provides sewing education with a focus on accessibility and practicality, as reported by the City of Dearborn.

The drive behind Sewing Your Life's inception comes from Alghuzzy, whose plans to train and support young women in the community through sewing were given a major boost by a grant from the U.S. Department of Labor. This was made possible, thanks to the advocacy by Mayor Hammoud's administration, and the grant was subsequently approved by the Dearborn City Council in July 2025. Alghuzzy, a Dearborn WORKS graduate, will initially offer training to up to 50 women at no cost to them, while she fulfills program grant requirements before transitioning the school into a for-profit business, according to the City of Dearborn's official press release.

Mayor Hammoud praised Alghuzzy's journey and resilience, stating, "Nasim’s story is truly inspirational and like many Dearborn entrepreneurs, she embodies the spirit of resilience, innovation, and community pride that defines our city. We are inspired by hardworking, entrepreneurial women like Nasim who help drive Dearborn’s economy. The City is committed to supporting women leaders like her and ensuring that, through programs like Dearborn WORKS, we continue to see more successful and impactful businesses that benefit our greater community." Alghuzzy's business has benefited from the continuous support of the city's Workforce & Business Services Division of the Economic Development Department, as reported by the City of Dearborn.

Having moved to the U.S. just two years ago, Alghuzzy expressed her gratitude for the City of Dearborn's support, "In the two years since my arrival to, the U.S., I have achieved many significant milestones towards my business dreams. I am proud of that progress and deeply thankful to Mayor Hammoud and his administration, as well as my community, for their unwavering support." Interested applicants can now seek enrollment in the sewing program, with classes set to start on November 17, the City of Dearborn's press release also notes.

The Dearborn WORKS initiative helps local women in Dearborn gain employment opportunities and career advancement through access to professional workshops and financial literacy courses. Women who complete the application process, which is overseen by the Dearborn Department of Economic Development, can take advantage of these resources aimed at fostering independent business success, as per the City of Dearborn.
