The United States Air Force has designated McGhee Tyson Air National Guard Base as the new main operating base for the KC-46 Pegasus aircraft, a move that is set to boost both national security and local economy in Knoxville, Tennessee. In a recent announcement, U.S. Senator Marsha Blackburn, who was instrumental in advocating for the base, confirmed the selection that brings with it not only strategic military advantage but also a promise of economic stability for the region. The 134th Air Refueling Wing, stationed at McGhee Tyson ANG Base, will be the new custodians of the next-generation refueler.

Senator Blackburn, who represents Tennessee, led the charge in championing the base during the Air Force's selection process, mobilizing support from the entire Tennessee congressional delegation. In a statement made by Blackburn's Senate Office, the senator noted, "McGee Tyson Air National Guard Base has a long, distinguished record of excellence, and today’s announcement reaffirms what we’ve known all along." She emphasized that hosting the KC-46 will ensure "rapid access to key operational areas at home and abroad while supporting jobs for Tennesseans."

The KC-46 Pegasus is the U.S. Air Force’s most recently developed aerial refueling aircraft and is expected to replace the aging fleet of KC-135 Stratotankers. This new aircraft is equipped with advanced technologies including boom and drogue refueling capabilities, secure communications, defensive systems, and the flexibility to accommodate cargo, passengers, as well as aeromedical evacuation operations. Its introduction is pivotal as it reflects the changing dynamics and increased complexities of global military engagement.

McGhee Tyson ANG Base, with its impressive history of over 68 years of service, has earned 16 Air Force Outstanding Unit awards, making it one of the most decorated refueling units within the Air Force’s ranks. The arrival of the KC-46 Pegasus at the base is expected to safeguard more than 1,500 jobs, and provide a substantial economic contribution of approximately $203 million annually.
