In an act of community support, MGM Resorts has stepped up to assist TSA workers at Harry Reid International Airport, providing meals and essential supplies amid an ongoing government shutdown. As reported by FOX5 Vegas, approximately 700 meals were dispatched to the federal workers who are currently facing the loss of income. With the Thanksgiving holiday approaching, MGM Resorts' Vice President of Corporate Sustainability, John Flynn, emphasized the importance of community support, stating, "You’ve got husbands and wives, boyfriends and girlfriends, you’ve got both of them losing their income, and that’s a double blow."
Additionally, MGM employees became carriers of goodwill, meeting TSA agents with vans filled with sustenance and basic necessities like toiletries. Impacting the TSA workforce, who reportedly screen over 50 million visitors a year at Harry Reid, the shutdown has strained an essential part of the Las Vegas economy. MGM Resorts acknowledges the critical role these federal employees play in the infrastructure supporting tourism, the city's economic engine. As stated in a News 3 LV interview, John Flynn remarked on the casino's intent to work with the airport on continuing support, reflecting a sentiment of enduring gratitude toward the TSA workers.
Officials from Harry Reid International have expressed an interest in building partnerships throughout the Las Vegas Valley, aiming to extend a helping hand towards the federal employees and their families during these trying times. While the airport plays host to a significant number of federal staff—some 1500 as per the airport officials—the shutdown's ripple effects stretch into the larger community, prompting calls for solidarity and mutual aid.
