Michigan Assistant Attorney General John L. Thurber has been honored by his peers with the Theodore W. Swift Civility Award for his outstanding display of decorum and commitment to the legal field. Bestowed by the Ingham County Bar Association, the award celebrates legal professionals who demonstrate respect and courtesy within the profession while maintaining the highest standards and traditions of the practice, according to the Michigan Attorney General's Office.
With an illustrious career spanning nearly three decades, Thurber has become a pillar of professionalism, acting as a beacon for those who follow in his footsteps, deeply committed to the rule of law. Working within the Alcohol & Gambling Enforcement Division, he has been a part of the Department of Attorney General since March 1996. Devoting his efforts especially in representing the Michigan Department of Corrections in federal court, Attorney General Dana Nessel emphasized Thurber's influence, stating, "His work has made a lasting impact on the State of Michigan, and his career embodies the very best of public service," as stated by the Michigan Attorney General's Office.
Thurber's educational foundation, receiving his Bachelor of Arts degree in History from Kenyon College in 1990 and proceeding to earn his law degree from the University of Detroit School of Law in 1993, set the stage for his entry into the legal arena. Giving voice to the state's legal apparatus in multiple cases across Michigan, he has tried dozens of cases and has presented arguments before the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals numerous times, as reported by the Michigan Attorney General's Office.
