Michigan students are adding a creative touch to winter safety through MDOT’s Paint the Plow initiative, with the 2025 theme, "Give plows space; it’s not a race," displayed on colorful snowplow designs to encourage cautious driving. Transportation Maintenance Worker Adam Westendorf praised the effort, saying, "It's great that the students are helping us get the word out on the importance of giving us room to work," and, "I think it's good that they're involved with getting these important safety messages out in a fun way," according to the Michigan Department of Transportation.

Schools including Heritage High School, Bear Lake High School, and the Bay City Boys and Girls Club contributed student artwork, turning snowplows into mobile safety reminders. These vibrantly decorated plows will operate across Michigan state roads this winter, with the public able to track them and get traffic updates on MDOT’s Mi Drive website, as reported by the Michigan Department of Transportation.

The Michigan Department of Transportation’s Paint the Plow program is accepting applications from schools and educational organizations for the 2026–27 season starting in March 2026. Applicants must submit a design and complete it before winter. Michigan Department of Transportation advises drivers to adjust speed for icy conditions, check forecasts, prepare their vehicles for winter, and keep a safe distance from plows. Michigan Department of Transportation said, "Safe roads start with all of us! Drive smart, give plows space and let's make this winter a safe one for Michigan."
