While many state offices close to observe the Thanksgiving holiday, Michigan workers in need of unemployment services won't be left in the lurch. The Michigan Unemployment Insurance Agency (UIA) has confirmed that its offices will be closed tomorrow and Friday, Nov. 28, but the agency's online services will remain accessible. According to an announcement made by the Michigan Labor and Economic Opportunity, claimants can still certify work searches and tap into a variety of digital resources throughout the holiday period.
For those looking to file claims or certify their job searches, UIA points users to their Michigan Web Account Manager (MiWAM), which is available 24/7. Despite the office closures, claim processing can proceed unimpeded online. However, the UIA did note that the automated phone system, MARVIN, won’t be available for certifying by phone until Monday, Dec. 1. Claimants must continue to report their job status and work eligibility requirements every two weeks to collect benefits, and with, the offices being closed for two days, there could be minor delays in the distribution of unemployment benefits to bank accounts or U.S. Bank debit cards.
UIA has made strides to ensure continuous support is provided through their AI-powered chatbot, also available round the clock during the Thanksgiving weekend. Both workers and employers can access this chatbot, which is designed for quick and accurate responses, using either a desktop or mobile device. The UIA's announcement also mentioned a slew of resources, including the UIA Claimant Roadmap and Online Coaching Sessions, all aimed at providing comprehensive support to users navigating the unemployment system. Furthermore, should anyone require personal assistance, they can schedule appointments or contact customer service starting again on Dec. 1.
Making strides toward becoming a national model for efficient, fair, and secure service delivery, the UIA also flags the upcoming MiUI system. Set to launch in Summer 2026, this modern computer system promises an improved user experience and bolstered anti-fraud measures. Ahead of its introduction, the agency has been working on resource development, such as instructional videos and enhanced local offices. These efforts are part of a broader UIA commitment to transparency and service optimization, evident in initiatives like the UIA Economic Dashboard and the Advocacy Program offering free legal aid for appeals of UIA redeterminations.
