Milwaukee City Hall will transform into a space of cultural celebration this Sunday, as the local Latvian community gathers to honor their heritage on the occasion of Latvia's Independence Day. According to a City of Milwaukee news release, Alderman Peter Burgelis, Chairperson of the Wisconsin Latvian Cultural Foundation, is the driving force behind the event, inviting media to cover the festivities scheduled tomorrow, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Caught in a narrative spanning decades, many Latvian families in Milwaukee can trace back their roots to ancestors who escaped the severe grip of Soviet occupation during and after World War II. These historical ties will be acknowledged and celebrated as part of the event at the City Hall Rotunda located at 200 E. Wells St. It's not just a commemoration, but the culmination of the "We Are Latvian" exhibit, which began earlier in the week.
Marking the 107th anniversary of Latvia's independence, the program boasts a lineup featuring cultural performances that promise to enchant and educate attendees. Distinguished guests set to deliver remarks include Elita Kuzma, the Latvian Ambassador to the United States, Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson, and Lieutenant Governor Sara Rodriguez, as outlined in the news release.
Latvia's profound connection to Milwaukee, praised in Burgelis' own words, will be shared and celebrated among those gathered in the heart of the city, wrapped in the grandeur of its City Hall. "Latvia has a deep, rich history in Milwaukee, across Wisconsin, and throughout the country. I couldn’t think of a better place to celebrate Latvian Independence Day in our community than at our beautiful City Hall. I look forward to a festive event that celebrates the Latvian people and culture," Burgelis professed in the statement, highlighting his personal investment in the event's success, as mentioned in the same news.
