As Wisconsin faces a delay in the SNAP benefits amid a federal government shutdown, Milwaukee communities and local churches are mobilizing to address the growing hunger crisis. Milwaukee’s Holy Redeemer Institutional Church of God in Christ has made food assistance a cornerstone of their outreach. The Fishes and Loaves Food Pantry, operated by the church, is serving hundreds of families each month, recognizing the urgency of the situation. "We have to be there for each other and right now, a lot of people need help," volunteer Gabrielle Mallory told FOX6 News.
In response to the FoodShare, Wisconsin's version of SNAP, interruption, Milwaukee officials and community members took decisive action through a food drive. This collective effort, involving Nourish MKE and Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin, brought in at least $22,000 in donations and enough food to supply 90,000 meals. Despite these efforts, the need for assistance continues to grow. "It is so hard being a single mom," said FoodShare recipient Natasha Prescott in a statement gathered by Spectrum News 1. With the shutdown impacting daily life, Prescott exemplifies the hardships many are facing as work hours increase and family time decreases.
Bay View's Immaculate Conception Catholic Church parishioners are also stepping in during these challenging times by donating essential food items like oatmeal, rice, and peanut butter to help those affected by the delay in benefits. "With SNAP being held back for a while, I thought we could do a little bit of something. Every little bit helps," Jo Ann Mueller, a longtime parishioner, explained to TMJ4 News. The sentiment of community support is palpable as more citizens become involved in mitigating the impact of the federal government shutdown.
Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson emphasized the temporality of these local efforts, stating through Spectrum News 1, "They’re only going to last so long. We need a resolution to this shutdown so that the federal government can resume the important work that all of us require of it to do." Those wishing to contribute or seek aid can access resources through Milwaukee County’s food assistance webpage, looking to ease the struggles families face during this uncertain time.
