The drive to unionize at Milwaukee's interactive science and technology center, Discovery World, is gaining momentum, with workers striving to gain acknowledgement from management for their effort to join the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, or IAM Union. At the forefront of this labor movement are the very individuals who make the museum a celebrated venue—staff devoted to crafting the educational and engaging experiences that both children and adults alike have come to appreciate at Discovery World.
According to the City of Milwaukee, despite the essential role these workers play in operating the museum's exhibits and programs, they allege that Discovery World management has chosen to meet their unionization efforts with resistance. Employees have reported encounters with tactics aimed to dissuade them from organizing, including the distribution of what they describe as anti-worker propaganda and experiences with intimidation. Efforts to unionize have garnered external support, as evidenced by a recent public statement voicing clear solidarity with the workers' cause.
Discovery World workers are seeking union representation and have outlined demands for respect, fair wages, a voice in the workplace, and clear career paths. The firing of Elijah Ewing-Scurlock, who was involved in the union efforts, has drawn attention, with supporters calling for his reinstatement.
Supporters of Discovery World employees say the museum should meet their union demands and formally recognize the IAM Union. They also want management to address worker concerns. The unionization effort has drawn public attention, and observers are watching how Discovery World’s administration responds.
