In an outpouring of community spirit, dozens of Chihuahuas have been rescued from dismal conditions in a Modesto rental home. An urgent call for foster homes and financial contributions has been issued by the animal rescue group New Beginnings for Merced County Animals, which uncovered the desperate situation. Sharon Lohman, founder and president of the organization, initially learned of the rescue need from Stanislaus County's animal services, indicating a staggering 30 to 80 Chihuahuas abandoned and in dire need of care, as reported by CBS News Sacramento.
In a challenging case of animal neglect, Lohman and her team have worked tirelessly, already having rescued 26 of these animals over the span of several days. The remaining nineteen dogs, which are reported as severely under-socialized and in poor health, will require costly medical treatments, including full dental care due to rotted teeth and potentially, eye surgeries. "Every single one of them needs full dentals," Lohman said, according to the interview given to CBS News Sacramento.
Simultaneously, while New Beginnings was coordinating the rescue in Modesto, additional calls for help were received from nearby residences in Ceres and Stockton. These included reports of more Chihuahuas being hoarded under appalling living conditions, with Lohman's group taking action and removing several more dogs. "As you can see, the teeth are rotted back here," one volunteer expressed the sorry state of the dogs' dental health, as noted by ABC30 News.
Fostering these Chihuahuas presents special challenges, as they have yet to experience the comfort of human touch. Katie Burns, one of the foster volunteers, is among those stepping forward to provide much-needed care. "It's amazing. This is what we need. Community is so important, and it's so important for those who need help," Burns told ABC30 News. To facilitate the healing process, New Beginnings supplies all essentials to foster homes, such as food and medical treatments. For those looking to assist, monetary donations are considered the biggest form of support, either by contacting Valley Animal Hospital directly to contribute towards the rescue's account or through the group's online wish list.
The homeowner plans to file a formal complaint with the Ceres Police Department against the person responsible for abandoning and neglecting the animals. Police have not yet issued an official response. In the meantime, the community and New Beginnings are working together to make sure the dogs get the care and fresh start they need.
