The Montgomery County Council has a busy couple of days ahead with committee meetings set to discuss the future of after-school programs and the integrity of background checks in schools. Today, a joint committee session is planned to delve into the Out-of-School-Time Strategic Plan, a crucial element for the nurturing of young minds outside the classroom. The meeting will bring together the Education and Culture (EC), Health and Human Services (HHS), and Planning, Housing and Parks (PHP) Committees. According to Montgomery County's official announcement, they will review efforts to improve the equity and accessibility of out-of-school programs which are a mainstay for many children's daily routines.

Among those leading the discussions today are the EC Committee Chair and Council Vice President Will Jawando, alongside committee members Gabe Albornoz and Kristin Mink. They will be joined by Chair Albornoz of the HHS Committee and councilmembers Dawn Luedtke and Laurie-Anne Sayles. The PHP Committee's input will come from Chair Andrew Friedson, with Council Vice President Jawando once again playing a key role and Councilmember Natali Fani-González rounding out the team. The briefing received from the County’s Network Advisory Group intends to closely examine and propose ways to better these critical services offered to the community's youth.

Moving onto the subject of safety and compliance, tomorrow, the Audit Committee is scheduled to meet to look into the Office of the Inspector General (OIG) Publication 26-01. This follows the previous meeting held on Sept. 26, as noted by Montgomery County, where the Office of Inspector General, the MCPS, and the Department of Health and Human Services offered insights into deficiencies and possible remedies. The upcoming session is expected to provide an update on the steps Montgomery County Public Schools has implemented to ensure their background checks are on par with legal and policy requirements.

The Audit Committee includes Government Operations and Fiscal Policy (GO) Chair, and Council President Kate Stewart, with Council Vice President Jawando, and Councilmembers Andrew Friedson and Sidney Katz also on board. They will be tasked to closely review the progress made since the initial September discussion. The focus will remain steadfast on the implementation of an action plan by the MCPS to correctly process and monitor background checks for employees and volunteers in a bid to bolster school safety measures. The importance of such diligence cannot be overstated, as the safety of children within educational institutions depends on the thorough vetting of those granted proximity to young learners.
