In a significant step towards improving road safety, Montgomery County reports a promising reduction in serious and fatal car crashes. The area's Vision Zero initiative, a crusade to eliminate severe on-road accidents by 2030, is allegedly making headway. Figures released in the County’s Vision Zero annual report indicate a 29% decline in serious and fatal accidents on Montgomery County’s high injury network (HIN) corridors in Fiscal Year 2025 (FY25) compared to numbers from 2015 to 2019. This update was recently published by Montgomery County.
The drop in roadway tragedies is a welcome relief for a County that has seen too many of its residents harmed in vehicular incidents. Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich, in a statement obtained by Montgomery County, mourned the loss of community members, including two students in recent months, and acknowledged the State Highway Agency's rapid response to state road issues. Elrich also highlighted the impact of a $15 million safety project on New Hampshire Avenue and a substantial $50 million initiative in Montgomery Hills along Georgia Avenue.
Moreover, the annual report documented a slightly less dramatic yet noteworthy 5% overall reduction in serious and fatal crashes in Montgomery County when juxtaposed with pre-pandemic rates. It's not just infrastructure improvements but legislative advancements that are credited for this shift. Wade Holland, the County's Vision Zero Coordinator, told Montgomery County that the Sergeant Patrick Kepp Act and broader use of automated enforcement have been essential tools in the mission to combat high-risk driving behaviors and improve safety.
Collaboration across various levels of government has been pivotal to the progress reported. With inputs from municipal, county, and state entities, MCDOT Director Chris Conklin highlighted the integration of pedestrian and bicycle safety measures with the Veirs Mill Road bus rapid transit (BRT) project. What’s inspiring is the urging of residents by the MCDOT officials, as seen in the Montgomery County statement, to actively participate in the pursuit of road safety by familiarizing themselves with the County's efforts.
