A chaotic jewelry store heist on San Antonio’s South Side ended with a 38-year-old suspect under arrest and completely nude on Saturday afternoon. The incident unfolded around 4:45 p.m. near Mayfield Boulevard and S. Zarzamora Road, where officers later found the suspect’s vehicle and took him into custody on multiple charges, police said.
How police say it unfolded
According to Fox San Antonio, investigators say the man smashed a jewelry case inside the store, then tried to make his getaway in a vehicle. When a 60-year-old man stepped in to stop him, the suspect allegedly drove over a curb and onto the sidewalk, opened his car door and ran the older man over before fleeing.
Police told the station the suspect then took off on foot across a nearby highway. Officers located the vehicle shortly afterward and apprehended the suspect, who was completely nude at the time of his arrest. Fox San Antonio reports he was booked on multiple charges.
A trend of jewelry grab-and-runs
The South Side arrest comes as jewelers across the region deal with a steady drumbeat of thefts this year, from large smash-and-grabs to quick grab-and-run jobs. The San Antonio Express-News documented a major April smash-and-grab at a Royal Jewelers outlet in San Marcos that ended with three suspects in custody. The industry watchdog Jewelers’ Security Alliance also logged a November 10 grab-and-run at The Rim earlier this month.

The San Antonio Police Department has described the suspect only by age and has not released his name or full charges. Anyone with information or surveillance video about the incident is asked to contact SAPD’s Robbery Task Force at 210-207-0300 or Crime Stoppers at 210-224-STOP (7867).
