Netflix's documentary "Selena Y Los Dinos" premiered on Monday. The film features home movies and archival footage from Selena Quintanilla-Pérez's family, including previously unreleased clips of her Houston Rodeo performance. It shows Selena's music career, her influence on Latin culture, and her personal life. Director Isabel Castro focuses on Selena's experiences without including commentary from critics or historians, according to Click2Houston.
Local fans attended a free screening at River Oaks Theatre, where all tickets were quickly claimed. Artistic Director Rob Saucedo told KHOU he was looking forward to the energy at the event. The screening allowed audiences to revisit memories of Selena’s performances.
The documentary focuses on Selena’s life and career, including her bilingualism and bicultural identity. Suzette Quintanilla said she wants the film to represent Selena’s and the family’s legacy and to inspire Latinos and younger generations. Director Castro and Quintanilla aim to show Latina joy and empowerment. As Suzette Quintanilla told Click2Houston, "It's also hopefully to inspire that if you have a dream, go for it."
