In Nevada County, efforts to support local veterans are receiving a boost from a blend of government initiatives and community involvement, ensuring that those who served are not forgotten when it comes to accessing vital services and benefits. The county's Veterans Services Office, as detailed in a recent article by Nevada County's News, is on a mission to guide more than 10,000 area veterans towards resources available to them, ranging from medical appointments to housing assistance.

County veterans services officer David West emphasized the need for comprehensive support and, together with the Board of Supervisors, has taken action against scams targeting veterans by backing legislation such as Senate Bill 694; this bill aims to block unaccredited businesses from charging vets for services they could get for free. The staff at the VSO submitted over 1,600 claims to the VA last year, which amounted to $4.3 million in funding for local veterans, West told Nevada County's News.

Volunteers are integral to the County’s support system, providing a variety of services, critical among them transportation to distant medical appointments that would otherwise be inaccessible. Volunteer drivers like Jim Bradshaw, Gary Tanaka, and Russ Bravard are lauded for their work; for Tanaka, eight years as a volunteer driver have been fueled by providing a sense of calm for those facing anxieties around their medical needs, he detailed in an interview with Nevada County's News.

More than addressing immediate logistical concerns, Nevada County's approach also spans to housing, partnering with AMI Housing to find affordable rentals for homeless veterans, guaranteeing rent and providing landlords financial incentives and immediate support for tenant-related issues; West urged property owners to become part of this program, which has varying rental options from houses to granny units to single rooms, those interested can contact AMI Housing for more information, according to the Nevada County's News.

The community’s show of appreciation extends beyond individual volunteering to involve over 130 local businesses, which, as part of the 5th annual Military Appreciation Week, offer discounts and special deals to veterans and active-duty military from Nov. 8-16, with some extending their offers year-round, a reminder of the collective gratitude for those who have served. West expressed his pride in the supportive community in his comments to Nevada County's News.
