After a 40-day government shutdown, Nevada Democratic senators Jacky Rosen and Catherine Cortez Masto voted in favor of a Senate deal to reopen the federal government. Their votes helped advance a House-passed continuing resolution. Rosen, who had opposed the Republican plan, supported the measure due to rising health care costs and challenges faced by Nevadans, as reported by 8 News Now.
Rosen decided to support the measure due to the ongoing hardships from the shutdown, including suspended SNAP benefits and issues in the air travel sector. She said, "The concession we’ve been able to extract to get closer to extending the Affordable Care Act tax credits is a vote on a bill drafted and negotiated by Senate Democrats," according to News3LV. Cortez Masto has previously supported bipartisan government funding and voted with Republicans 15 times in this case, saying she believes an open government helps achieve a full bipartisan budget for 2026.
The Senate voted 60-40 to move forward with the House's continuing resolution, aiming to end the shutdown that lasted over a month. The resolution provides a year of full funding for SNAP, includes a future vote on extending the Affordable Care Act’s tax credit, and protects more than 4,000 federal employees from layoffs through January 30, 2026. The bill still needs to pass the House, which has not held votes since September 19. Rosen said, "and Senate Republicans need to work with us in a bipartisan way before the next deadline," as mentioned by News3LV.
