New York City Mayor-Elect Zohran Mamdani said he plans to contact President Donald Trump before his inauguration on New Year’s Day. He told NBC New York, “I will be reaching out to the White House as we prepare to actually take office because this is a relationship that will be critical to the success of the city.”
Facing mixed messages from President Trump, including conditional offers of help and warnings about withholding federal funds, New York City’s incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, said he plans to cooperate while opposing any policies that could harm New Yorkers. Trump told Fox News anchor Bret Baier that he does not plan to reach out, saying “It would be more appropriate for him to reach out to us,” in a statement obtained by The New York Post. Trump added, “I want to make the city succeed.”
The mayor-elect said his preparations for office include consulting with Gov. Kathy Hochul on strategies to handle potential actions from Trump’s administration, taking a proactive approach to possible federal involvement in New York. He also said he is willing to work on shared goals, like lowering the cost of living, while noting that working with the federal government can be complicated. His plan to start talks marks the beginning of a new relationship between New York City Hall and the Trump White House.
