A four-alarm fire tore through a North Baltimore warehouse yesterday, leaving enumerable visual marks on the day's canvas in the form of smoke and flames, prompting an urgent response from the Baltimore City Fire Department. In an effort to staunch the fire's voracious appetite, twenty-three residents were evacuated as firefighters valiantly stepped between danger and homes to battle the blaze. Alexander Harrington, a former military serviceman, was among the first to alert the authorities after witnessing the smoke upon leaving work. "I drove over and saw wood stacked up in the back of the building in flames. Smoke going all over the place so I parked back at the office, ran over, called 911," Harrington told WMAR-2 News.

The Baltimore Fire Department received the first call regarding the fire on the 400 block of W 23rd Street at 1:18 p.m., as per the reports. Amidst the chaos, the fire, initially starting outside, spread to the interior of the building, compelled by strong winds.

Firefighters acted with urgency to protect the neighborhood. Baltimore Fire Chief James Wallace emphasized the daring efforts of his team: "These men and women absolutely risked their lives," he said, according to WBAL-TV. Crews wore down the fire's defenses by 5:30 p.m., despite the fire not being officially declared under control due to lingering hot spots. Two businesses housed within the warehouse, a woodworking shop and what is believed to be a toy distributor, were affected. The aftermath left residents uncertain about when they may return to their homes, as BGE had to cut power in the response area.

The Maryland Transit Administration responded as well to the fire's disruptive fury, issuing a southbound detour for the LocalLink 94-Fort McHenry bus until 5 p.m.
