In Queens, an NYPD officer shot one of three unleashed dogs after it bit the officer. The police had responded to a 911 call reporting dogs chasing pedestrians on 114th Road and 155th Street in South Jamaica around 8 a.m. yesterday, according to Gothamist.
When officers arrived, they saw two dogs running off leash and tried to secure them. During this, a third dog came and bit an officer on the leg, the NYPD reported. The officer then fired their weapon, fatally wounding the dog, according to police officials. Both officers were taken to a local hospital and are in stable condition. All three dogs were identified as pit bulls, and authorities are still looking for their owner.
A report from amNewYork provided additional details of the confrontation, noting that the officer sustained what was described as a "substantial wound" from the dog's bite. The officer then used their service weapon on the charging pit bull mix, which was killed at the scene.
No arrests have been made in connection with the loose dogs, and the NYPD’s investigation is ongoing. Authorities are focusing on the condition of the injured officer and identifying the owner of the dogs.
