An off-duty Harris County sheriff's deputy shot and killed a man outside his Atascocita home on Friday in a distressing incident involving his child and a man with reported mental health issues. The shooting took place on the 5300 block of Treewood Drive, where the deputy opened fire on the 27-year-old man, Darrius Williams, who tried to enter the deputy's vehicle with his child inside. Click2Houston reported that Williams, who lived just a block away from the scene, was allegedly attempting to get into the passenger side before he was fatally shot.

Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez confirmed that the deputy made multiple verbal commands to the man, but Williams did not heed these warnings. Upon Williams opening the vehicle's door, the deputy, fearing for his child's safety, fired multiple rounds. The identity of the off-duty deputy has not yet been released, and it remains unclear whether Williams was armed at the time of the incident. The deputy and his child were unharmed, as per the statement obtained by FOX26 Houston.

Tieneeshia Williams, the mother of Darrius Williams, spoke about her son's struggle with schizoaffective disorder, expressing frustration with the mental health system she believes is "set up for failure.” Just days before the shooting, she reached out to law enforcement with concerns about her son's behavior. "I told them he’s talking to himself. He’s agitated. He’s doing push-ups in the street. He’s jogging. He thinks he’s in the army," Tieneeshia told Click2Houston, hoping it would prevent a tragic misunderstanding.

The Harris County Sheriff's Office and the Harris County District Attorney's Office are investigating the shooting. The findings will be presented to the grand jury, which will determine whether charges will be filed against the deputy. A family friend of the Williams, Lorretta Ray, voiced her concerns, pointing to home security footage that might shed light on the tragic events, "They say they have Ring cam video. That's all we've been told," Ray explained to FOX26 Houston. The community awaits further details as the investigation continues.
