The Ohio House of Representatives has passed House Bill 430, which seeks to honor the memory of a fallen law enforcement officer, Lt. Vance M. Andrews of the Ohio State Highway Patrol. The bill was sponsored by State Representatives Mark Hiner (R-Howard) and Kevin Miller (R-Newark) and was approved to designate a section of State Route 13 in Knox County's Mount Vernon as the "Ohio State Highway Patrol Lt. Vance M. Andrews Memorial Highway."
Lt. Andrews dedicated 12 years of service to the Ohio State Highway Patrol before meeting with a tragic accident on November 21, 1945, while patrolling the very roadway that is now set to bear his name. The vehicle he was in, which was operating near Mount Vernon on State Route 13, unexpectedly veered off the road and collided with a bridge abutment, marking the end of his watch. According to the Ohio House of Representatives, Rep Hiner said, "Though Lt. Andrews passed nearly 80 years ago, it remains important that we honor his sacrifice and the service he gave to keep our communities safe."
The passage of HB 430 not only memorializes Lt. Andrews but also serves as a reminder to the present community and motorist passersby of the sacrifices made by officers in the line of duty. The legislation was driven by a communal respect for those who have given their lives in service, ensuring that their contributions are not lost to the passage of time.
Representative Miller also expressed the significance of the road dedication, mentioning its importance for future generations. "The dedication of this roadway is to ensure the sacrifice of Lt.
