Ohio's elections are stepping into the future with a new tech-savvy assistant named Eva, a virtual tool designed to support election officials with real-time guidance on the state's voting procedures. In an announcement from Secretary of State Frank LaRose, Eva was presented as the state's first AI-powered election administration assistant, created to provide immediate assistance across all 88 counties. According to a statement by LaRose obtained by the Ohio Secretary of State's office, "Eva can provide those answers immediately with a simple search prompt." This kind of resource is poised to quickly become indispensable in a field where time-sensitive decision-making is often coupled with the necessity for accuracy.
Eva stands apart by being focused narrowly on the nuanced world of election administration - a niche where the need for detail ultimately can decide the course of communities and the voice of the electorate. LaRose highlighted the AI assistant's knack for data, suggesting, "She’s definitely a data nerd and a bit on the wonky side," according to the Ohio Secretary of State's office, emphasizing Eva's efficiency when it comes to handling inquiries that would otherwise require sifting through a cumbersome 524-page rulebook. Despite the confidence in Eva's capabilities during its testing phase, officials are reminded not to rely solely on the AI's responses, as it remains a beta project. Instead, they are encouraged to also consult with their designated county prosecutor for legal advice.
The use of AI in this context is a definite nod to current trends seen across varied industrial landscapes, but tailored here to meet the specific demands of election officials. As Lori Elchert, Seneca County Board of Elections Director, describes in an interview announced by the Ohio Secretary of State's office, "Election work is fast-paced and detail-driven, and having a tool that can instantly pull accurate information from official sources will make our jobs more efficient and allow us to better serve voters."
Secretary LaRose is championing a clear initiative to blend technology with the practical needs of governance to ensure greater accuracy, transparency, and security. In addition to Eva, the office has rolled out several other tech initiatives, including the Voter Registration Dashboard, Election Results Dashboard, and tools focused on maintaining voter roll integrity. These advancements, noted Secretary LaRose, aim to create a legacy of improved administrative processes and a greater emphasis on election integrity for Ohio. "I hope that when we leave this office Ohioans will look at our administration and say we left it better and more accountable than it was before," Secretary LaRose told the press, positioning Eva as a key part of that transformative mission.
